Whether you’re a filmmaker or a still photographer, this session will guide you through setting up a small-footprint darkroom at home while minimising your environmental impact.

Discover the art and science of black-and-white negative film development in this hands-on workshop designed for those with limited space and an interest in sustainable practices. Whether you’re a filmmaker or a still photographer, this session will guide you through setting up a small-footprint darkroom at home while minimising your environmental impact.
THE DETAILS:
The workshop is divided into two parts:
Theoretical Introduction:
Learn the fundamentals of black-and-white film development, including the chemical processes involved in processing negatives. We’ll explore innovative and eco-friendly developer recipes made from unconventional ingredients such as coffee waste, foraged plants, beer, wine, and even urine.
Practical Demonstration
Watch and participate as we mix an ecological developer and process a roll of 8mm film. During the 15-minute developing process, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and discuss tips, techniques, and troubleshooting.
The workshop concludes with a group discussion, offering space to share thoughts and ideas on sustainable film practices.

Will De Ritter is a London-based filmmaker. He works with celluloid film and photochemicals to produce films which tread a fine line between experimental and genre movies. He is interested in working with obsolete photographic technology to produce effects which are digitally unachievable, and developing sustainable solutions to photographic practices.
